POLS Engineering ehf

POLS Engineering is an innovation company in Ísafjörður that manufactures SM4 sensors. The company's owner worked as a snow observer in Ísafjörður and wanted to design sensors that were cheaper, safer, and simpler to install than the snow-depth sensors that had been in use. The result was the SM4 sensors, which have the following features:

• Easy to install. Anyone can set them up without special technical knowledge.
• Lightweight and easy to carry up a mountain
• Work well in conditions such as snow drift or icing, where many other snow-depth sensors run into problems
• Require a pole or mast as tall as the sensor. This can be implemented in different ways.
• In addition to real-time snow depth, the sensors provide information on air temperature and the temperature profile in the snow, which is useful for assessing avalanche risk.
• The sensors can also be used for purposes other than snow measurements, e.g. measuring sea temperature and temperature profiles in water or in the ground.
